Prevention and Control of Sheep and Goat Pox: Practical Strategies for Field Veterinarians

Effective prevention and control of sheep and goat pox (SGP) require a proactive approach that combines early disease recognition, prompt implementation of control measures, and strategic vaccination. As SGP is a highly contagious transboundary disease, delays in intervention can lead to rapid spread within susceptible flocks, resulting in substantial production losses and disruption of livestock movement. For practicing veterinarians, a well-planned control strategy is essential not only for managing infected animals but also for preventing further transmission within and between farms. 

Early Detection Supports Effective Control1 

Successful disease control begins with rapid identification of suspected cases. Once sheep and goat pox is recognized, immediate action can reduce opportunities for virus transmission and improve the effectiveness of subsequent control measures. 

The chapter emphasizes that effective control depends on coordinated efforts involving veterinary services, awareness among livestock owners, and prompt identification of disease in affected regions. Timely recognition enables veterinarians to implement biosecurity measures before infection spreads extensively through susceptible animal populations.

Control of sheep and goat pox relies on a combination of management practices rather than a single intervention. Essential measures include: 

  • Prompt isolation and culling of infected animals where appropriate.

According to the chapter, live attenuated vaccines are currently the only available vaccines for sheep pox virus (SPPV) and goat pox virus (GTPV). These vaccines are considered cost-effective and are capable of providing substantial protection when implemented appropriately. 

The level of protection achieved within a flock depends on maintaining adequate herd immunity. Annual vaccination programmes capable of achieving greater than 80% herd immunity are considered important for reducing disease transmission and protecting susceptible animal populations. 

Challenges That Limit Disease Control 

Despite the availability of effective vaccines, disease control can remain difficult when preventive programmes are inconsistently implemented. The chapter identifies several factors that contribute to continued circulation of capripoxviruses. 

A lack of mandatory and consistent vaccination policies may leave a significant proportion of animals susceptible to infection. In addition, poor regulation of animal movement allows infected animals to introduce the virus into previously unaffected flocks, facilitating further disease spread. Successful disease management depends on integrating multiple components, including surveillance, early diagnosis, quarantine, movement control, vaccination, and close collaboration between veterinarians and animal owners. Applying these measures together strengthens disease control efforts and reduces opportunities for virus transmission within susceptible flocks.
